⚡ KEY TAKEAWAYS: Jaisalmer Desert Camp

  • A budget Jaisalmer desert camp costs about ₹2,500 to ₹4,500 per tent for two, depending on the operator and inclusions (checked 6 November 2026).
  • Sam puts you close to the busy dune activities; Khuri is described as quieter. A higher price does not by itself guarantee privacy.
  • Jeep safaris, transfers, taxes and festive dinners can cost extra. Ask for an itemised quote and written cancellation terms.
  • October 2026 reports describe a ban on after-sunset tourist activity on Desert National Park dunes near Sam. Confirm the exact location before booking.
  • Some Sam camps restrict group bookings, Patrika reported in December 2025. Check eligibility with the camp, and confirm winter heating.
Key term Meaning
Sam The main camp area, about 41 km west of Jaisalmer, with around 150 camps in season.
Khuri A smaller desert-camp area southwest of Jaisalmer, commonly described as less crowded than Sam.
Swiss tent A large canvas tent on a fixed base with a bed and an attached bathroom.
AC tent A tent with an air conditioner; ask whether it also heats.
Desert National Park (DNP) A protected area of the Thar Desert; October 2026 reports describe after-sunset limits on its dunes near Sam.
Lakhmana Dunes near Sam outside the park boundary, not covered by the sunset order.
Dune bashing A fast jeep ride over the dunes, often charged per jeep on top of the package.
Gala dinner A mandatory paid dinner some camps add around Christmas and New Year.
Desert Festival Rajasthan Tourism's three-day festival at Jaisalmer Fort and the Sam dunes.

Jaisalmer’s scheduled passenger flights are seasonal, and from 25 October 2026 a new daily Air India flight from Mumbai lands there at 11:40 am. Its passengers can reach the dunes for the camps’ usual 3 to 4 pm check-in.

Information checked on 6 November 2026.

A Jaisalmer desert camp sells a tent, two meals and an evening programme, and at the cheaper end most camps sell much the same package. About 150 camps operate around Sam in season, Patrika reported in December 2025, and Lonely Planet describes the dunes there turning into a carnival from late afternoon until the next morning.

As the price rises, the extra rupees buy a larger tent and air-conditioning and, at the better-placed camps, distance from the crowd, the music and the jeep tracks. A higher price alone does not guarantee a quiet night; location matters as much.

Sam or Khuri: which dunes suit you

Choose Sam for easy access to camel rides, jeep rides and the evening shows. Consider Khuri for a smaller camp setting and, as guides describe it, a quieter night. Noise and privacy depend on the individual camp as much as on the area.

Sam lies 41 km west of Jaisalmer on a sealed road, about an hour by car. The dunes run for roughly 2 km. Most camps, camels and jeeps work this stretch: Patrika put the camels available each day at about 2,000.

Sam suits a first night in the desert. Booking listings place many camps within a minute’s walk of the main dunes, so the camel rides, folk shows and sunset point are close at hand.

Groups of friends should check booking policies first. Patrika reported in December 2025 that more than 90% of Sam’s resorts were accepting only families and couples, after operators blamed large groups for drunken behaviour and late-night DJ music. That was an operator policy, not a government rule, so confirm the current policy with the camp in writing before paying.

Khuri lies southwest of Jaisalmer, near the Desert National Park (DNP). Published distances range from about 40 to 50 km. Guidebooks and operators describe it as less crowded than Sam, with fewer camps and longer camel routes. The Patrika report covered Sam only, so ask Khuri camps about group bookings too.

What each price band buys

The price of a camp is quoted per tent, usually for two people. The figures below are indicative prices from a small sample of operator rate cards and booking listings, checked on 6 November 2026, not fixed market tariffs.

BandPrice per tent per night (2 people)Typical advertised inclusions in the sampled listingsExamples
Budget₹2,500 to ₹4,500Non-AC Swiss tent with attached bathroom and hot water; short sunset camel ride, often one camel for two; folk show; vegetarian buffet dinner and breakfastSam: ₹4,000 per couple for a non-AC tent, extra adult ₹1,800
Mid-range₹6,000 to ₹12,500Air-conditioned or larger tent, private veranda, a quieter position; some add a jeep ride or a private sunset spotSam: ₹6,000 per couple for an AC tent. Khuri: ₹7,500 to ₹12,500 per tent for two at one camp
LuxuryConfirm directly with the propertyPrivate estate, spa, seasonal pool, guided outings; booking listings show a mandatory conservation contribution per person per nightSUJÁN The Serai, 21 tents at Bherwa, near Chandan: a benchmark outside the Sam and Khuri camp areas, not a like-for-like camp

The examples are not interchangeable: tent size, bathrooms, heating, meals, safari length and location differ, and most camps charge for each extra bed. One Sam camp lists its rates without saying whether GST is included, and a Khuri camp says only that “GST applicable as per current rates”. Ask for the final total, tax included, on a written confirmation before you pay.

In the sampled packages, the budget band buys the standard Sam evening of tent, meals and folk show. Mid-range prices may buy a larger or air-conditioned tent and more privacy, but the difference depends on each camp’s location and layout.

The Serai, a Relais & Châteaux property on its own estate outside both dune areas, sets its own inclusions and compulsory charges, so ask it for a direct quote covering the room, meals, taxes and contributions. It closes from June to August and opens its pool from September to March. For a comparison with another desert tent city, see TravelPep’s guide to Rann Utsav.

What “all-inclusive” leaves out

A camp package does not always include a jeep ride. At one Sam camp sampled for this guide, a dune-bashing jeep safari costs ₹1,500 per jeep, a night safari ₹2,000 per jeep and a quad-bike ride ₹1,000 a person. A Khuri camp charges ₹750 a person for a jeep safari, with a minimum of four.

These are single operators’ published rates, not standard prices. Before booking a night safari, check that its route avoids the park dunes closed after sunset.

Transfers cost extra too. The same Sam camp charges ₹2,000 for a return car between Jaisalmer and the camp, or ₹3,000 for a larger car, and ₹1,000 more from the airport.

Holiday dates change the price most. The Sam camp’s non-AC tent costs ₹4,000 on normal nights, ₹7,000 over Diwali (7 to 20 November 2026) and ₹15,000 on 31 December. Booking listings for several Sam camps add a mandatory gala dinner around Christmas and New Year, from ₹1,500 to ₹8,500 per adult.

Cancellation terms deserve as much attention as the rate. The Sam camp takes a 50% advance and refunds 90% if you cancel more than 30 days ahead, but its wording around the 14- and 15-day cut-offs is unclear. Ask the camp to confirm the refundable amount, the deadline and any deductions in writing before you pay.

Desert nights in winter

On 1981 to 2010 climate averages, Jaisalmer’s January days reach about 23.8°C and its nights average 9.1°C. The same climate summary puts the coldest nights at around 5°C. A tent holds little of the day’s warmth.

None of the camp pages sampled mentions a heater. An “AC tent” may only cool, so ask whether the tent has a heater or a warm-air setting, and whether it costs extra.

Pack for the drop after sunset:

  • thermal base layers and a fleece or down jacket;
  • a woollen cap and socks for sleeping;
  • closed shoes, since the sand is cold at dawn;
  • a torch for the walk between tent and dining area.

How to choose a safe camp

Start with the paperwork, and expect little of it. The Ministry of Tourism runs a voluntary scheme that approves and classifies tented accommodation as Standard or Deluxe, and Rajasthan registers camping sites under its rural tourism scheme. None of the camp pages sampled claims either. Ask the camp what approval it holds, and ask to see it.

Check reviews against the camp’s own terms. A review praising the food tells you nothing about the refund clause. Ask for the inclusions, the camel-ride length and the cancellation terms in one written message.

Book directly with the camp or through a booking platform, never through someone who approaches you in town. Rajasthan’s Tourism Trade (Facilitation and Regulation) Act, 2010 bans touting at tourist places, and a 2021 amendment made misbehaviour with tourists a cognisable offence.

For women and solo travellers, the practical questions are specific. Ask where the evening DJ party runs, how late it lasts, and how far it is from your tent. Ask whether the tent locks from inside. Families and couples may prefer a camp that limits large group bookings; ask about that policy too.

Plan to arrive in daylight. Sunset in Jaisalmer falls between about 5:53 pm and 6:20 pm from late November to late January, and the drive to Sam takes about an hour. Ask for the driver’s name and the vehicle number in writing. India’s national emergency number is 112.

Camel and jeep rides: questions to ask

India’s Prevention of Cruelty to Draught and Pack Animals Rules, 1965 set legal maximums: 250 kg of load for a camel, no more than nine hours of work a day and no more than five hours without rest. These are legal limits, not recommended loads.

Before you ride, ask:

  • how long the ride lasts, and whether you share a camel;
  • the full price, agreed before you mount, since Lonely Planet reports handlers demanding more money on the way;
  • whether the camel has rested between rides that evening; walk away from an animal that looks injured, exhausted or distressed.

Before a jeep ride, ask whether the vehicle is registered for commercial use and carries a fitness certificate. In November 2024, a district drive at Sam acted against 25 private vehicles running safaris without these papers and seized nine. Dune bashing is a fast, steep ride, so ask about seat belts, age limits for children and whether the route is allowed under current park rules.

Rules on the dunes since October 2026

In October 2026, the forest department directed operators to stop tourist entry, camel safaris and other tourism activities after sunset on dunes inside the Desert National Park boundary near Sam. Reports describe a Regional Forest Officer’s letter of 11 October 2026 citing waste dumped by some operators and laser lights used at night.

Chandrapal Singh Chauhan, the DNP’s Deputy Conservator of Forests, said the rule applies only to the park’s part of Sam. Lakhmana and other dunes outside the boundary are not covered by that order, though other local rules still apply there.

Ask your camp to name the dunes its evening programme uses, and to confirm they comply with current forest department directions. Reports of the order do not mention morning access, so ask before planning a sunrise walk there.

Visiting the park itself for wildlife needs a permit from the Sudasari checkpost. A local guide reported in October 2026 that permits cost ₹100 for Indian visitors and ₹300 for foreign visitors. Rajasthan raised park fees by 10% from 1 April 2026, so confirm the fee at the counter.

Desert Festival 2027: what to ask before booking

Rajasthan Tourism lists the Desert Festival for 18 to 20 February 2027, at Jaisalmer Fort and the Sam dunes. Camps set their own festival-week rates: the Sam camp sampled almost doubles its non-AC price for Diwali, and a Khuri camp says its rates vary in Desert Festival week.

Do not assume normal rates apply: ask for a written quote for the exact dates, covering meals, transfers, safaris, taxes and any compulsory event charges. For another Rajasthan fair with its own tent camps, see TravelPep’s guide to Pushkar Mela.

Getting there and finding the calm

Getting there and hours: Jaisalmer receives seasonal scheduled passenger flights in winter; in 2026, services stopped from late March to October. Air India flies daily from Delhi and, from 25 October 2026, from Mumbai. Check the schedule before paying for a non-refundable camp night.

Sam is 41 km west of the city and Khuri about 40 to 50 km southwest, each about an hour by road. Camps usually check in from 3 to 4 pm and check out by 10 to 11 am (camp rate card, checked 6 November 2026).

Transport safety: Book the transfer through the camp or your hotel, and get the fare, pickup point and driver’s number in writing first. Leave Jaisalmer early enough to arrive before sunset, since the road to the dunes runs through open desert.

Access needs: None of the camp pages sampled gives step-free access information. Ask the camp about the path from car park to tent, the bathroom layout and the walk to the dunes.

Finding the calm: Early morning is usually quieter, since Lonely Planet notes that many day visitors come only for sunset. Sunrise is about 7:35 am in mid-January, varying by date. Ask your camp about permitted dunes outside the park boundary, such as Lakhmana, or near Khuri, and confirm access and transport before setting out.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Jaisalmer desert camp cost per night?

A budget tent for two costs about ₹2,500 to ₹4,500 a night, checked on 6 November 2026. That usually includes dinner, breakfast, a short camel ride and a folk show. Sampled air-conditioned tents cost ₹6,000 to ₹12,500. Confirm the final price, including GST and compulsory charges, before booking.

Both suit families, for different reasons. Sam has more camps and short walks to the camel rides and folk shows. Khuri is described as quieter, with fewer camps.

Can a group of friends book a camp at Sam?

Booking policies vary by camp. Patrika reported in December 2025 that more than 90% of Sam’s resorts were accepting only families and couples. Confirm group eligibility with the camp in writing before paying.

Are camel safaris allowed after sunset at Sam?

Not inside the Desert National Park boundary, according to October 2026 reports of a forest department order. Dunes outside the park, such as Lakhmana, are not covered by that order. Confirm the exact location with your camp before booking.

How cold is a desert camp in January?

January nights in Jaisalmer average 9.1°C on 1981 to 2010 climate averages, and the coldest fall to around 5°C. Pack thermals, a warm jacket and a woollen cap. Ask the camp whether the tent has a heater.
